The Phoenix Suns are looking for performers to sing or play the national anthem before their home games during the 2010-2011 season. There are 44 home games, including three pre-season openers.
“We really look forward to this day every year and have some amazing talent here in the Valley,” said Kip Helt, vice president in game entertainment and one of the judges. “We get solo performers to choirs to guitar players . . . We even had a group of seven trumpet performers play last year at one of the Suns games.”
Participants will check in when they arrive, receive a number and perform in that order. They’ll go on stage before a panel of judges that consists of a combination of Phoenix Suns staff members, season ticket holders and past anthem performers.
Helt said the performers with the best chance of making it on the court can accomplish three things: they can sing or play in tune, they know the words to the anthem and they can perform it in 90 seconds. Those with performing experience can bring resumes, but it isn’t mandatory.
While national acts sometimes come and perform at Suns games, Helt said it’s all about homegrown talent. Trumpeter Jessie Maguire is a favorite to play the national anthem at home games, and pop star Jordin Sparks performed her first anthem at a game when she was 12 years old.
“Just relax and have fun, and don’t get too uptight about it,” said Helt. “We just appreciate people coming out and thing it’s a wonderful experience, and people we want people to leave thinking they are glad they did that. And who knows? You might be selected to sing in front of a sell-out NBA game crowd.”
