Cell phone charges have changed a lot over the past decade. Thanks to price wars, different plans and new services, there’s a good chance you can save some money on your bill:

• If you’re just an occasional user, go with a prepaid plan. Traditional plans charge you for about 200 minutes per month whether you use them or not.
• Don’t use 411 to find a business listing, dial 1-800-GOOG-411. It’s a free service from Google that saves you the usual charge that can be $2 per call.
• Scan you bill monthly for services you didn’t ask for. For example, emergency roadside assistance is automatically tacked onto some bills for $3 to $5 per month.
• If you’ve been with your carrier for over two years, check their current offers. All major carriers now allow existing customers to change plans mid-contract without paying fees or extending the contract. You’ll still be with the same carrier, but you’ll probably find a better deal there.
