The guy that made it famous didn’t even write the song about the dance and wasn’t the first to record it. But he did bring it to a worldwide audience. And he is coming to the valley this Friday.
[lastfm]Chubby Checker[/lastfm] celebrated the 50th Anniversary of [lastfm]Hank Ballard[/lastfm]’s ‘The Twist’ yesterday in Philadelphia, where he recorded his version in 1959. It was released this week in 1960 and hit #1 for the first of two times in September of that year. Two years later, it topped the charts again becoming the first single to top the Billboard Hot 100 Chart twice. Here’s a shot of Chubby twisting with the crowd yesterday, and an interview clip from a couple of years ago talking about the dance that’s still the biggest of all time.
If you want to do The Twist with Chubby yourself, he’ll be at Harrah’s Ak Chin Casino this Friday for two shows including a matinee show at 3pm.
