There’s a pond just outside the Phoenix Zoo. That’s where they found him. These creatures are normally found in the Gulf states. How did he get here? They think it might have been someon’e pet and that they just dropped him off.
What? Did they think he would just hop the fence and join the rest of the zoo life? Or maybe sneak in when no one was watching? It is an alligator snapping turtle, weighing 62 pounds! Oh, but they say these guys can get even bigger. Russ Johnson, President of the Phoenix Herpetological Society, said that he recalled seeing one as big as 200 pounds.
Alligator snapping turtles are the largest freshwater turtle in North America. These turtles have the second-strongest bite force of any animal after the crocodile. How strong? Nearly 1,500-pounds of force; capable of severing off a human hand.
The Phoenix Herpetological Society plans to build a tank for the turtle at its facility near Dynamite Boulevard and Scottsdale Road and they say that they just might put it on display.
