A Texas third grader was given a week’s detention for eating a Jolly Rancher candy she had brought from home.  School officials of the Brazos Independent School district say they were just obeying a state law that prohibits junk food.

That story this morning opened up a slew of calls.  Here are a couple.

    I was under the impression the law was to prevent the schools from loading up with soda and candy machines to raise funds at our children’s expense. It is time people start using common sense and get government out of school.
