It seems a new 2% food sales tax takes effect today in Phoenix, and will last 5 years. City Council hopes to generate $12.5 million this fiscal year, and another $50 million in 2011. Currently, if you shop in Phoenix, you pay an 8.3% sales tax on NON-food items at grocery stores. But, it’s been almost 30 years since there’s been a food tax. This is pretty common in the valley, as Mesa and Surprise are the only cities WITHOUT one! Remember, this tax is only when shopping at the store.
And you healthy eaters thought you had a leg up on us fast food junkies. HAHA! Now, the joke’s on YOU. Excuse me, I have to hit up a drive-thru.
